San Miguel is a small, private middle school for low income urban youth from the greater Providence area. It serves boys from all cultures and faiths in grades five through eight.
San Miguel provides not only an extraordinary education but a safe learning environment. Many inner city schools are plagued by asphalt. San Miguel is one of these schools surrounded by too much gray and not enough green.
The purpose of this project is twofold: First, this project will replace a large portion of asphalt with gardens and second, it will broaden the learning experience of the San Miguel students by expanding their learning environment to the outdoors. It will provide an alternative venue for the teaching/learning experience to take place.
The plans for the garden include an aviary garden, vegetable garden and a picnic area for mentor groups to meet.
St Sebastian's school is a school in Needham, Ma that considers itself a brother school to San Miguel. St Sebastian's is currently working on a fundraising project that will help alleviate the cost of the project. With the help of the St Sebastian's community, the San Miguel community and the people who donate privately to San Miguel, a beautiful as well as educational garden will be in place by this spring.
