About Our Program

– On Wednesday, May 21 Pilgrim High School's (PHS) Peace, Happiness and Serenity Garden will officially be opened at 1:00 P.M. It marks the culmination of the third phase of the project. The project began with the PHS class of 2005 who developed the concept and collected the first donations. Since then students, faculty and staff have been collaborating with the Children's Garden Network (CGN), the RI Nursery and Landscape Association, URI and local government to create a multi-use space for education, reflection and rejuvenation. "We would like to individually thank everyone who contributed but there are just so many. It has been a school-wide effort. Tech. Ed. built benches, Special Education students built bird houses, Assistant Principal, Marie Cote found volunteers to help with the over 1000 man-hours of labor and just about every department donated flowers. The community has been so supportive. City workers came in and cut back some of the trees so the remaining trees could flourish. United Building Supply provided lumber and PJ Keating Co. helped with the crushed stone for the paths. Richmond Sand and Gravel helped with 2500 pounds of mulch and loam, and Confeda Gardens made our garden bloom," recited Kathleen Buckley, coordinator for the garden project. Around the garden, designed by Dennis Dubee, you will find two gazebos provided through Pilgrim's School-Based coordinator, Jane Berman. Five ceramic sculptures made by PHS students in cooperation with John Fazzino of Providence College as part of the VSA Arts Grant that was secured by Pilgrim Art teacher, Sharon Katseff.
"While the community won't get to officially enjoy the garden until after the ceremonies at 1:30, birds have already taken up residence in every bird house in the garden. I think that is a good sign that this is a very welcoming space", said Kathy Buckley.
