The seed catalogs have started to arrive and that means Spring can't be far behind. For several years now, the Campus School gardening program has been growing slowly. Teachers have started seeds in newspaper planters and we learned paper whites grow nicely in plastic cups filled with rocks. We've successfully raised a wide assortment of vegetables and flowers in raised beds. We experimented with pumpkins and watermelon last year. Students couldn't wait to get back to the kitchen to sample the watermelon they grew! With the support and funding from CGN, the Campus School garden program is ready to implement several new projects this year:
Stepping Stones
With the help of the art teacher, each student attending the Campus School this year will design and create a stepping stone for our gardens. These stones will incorporate materials from the RI Recycling Center and create a permanent memory of our students and for our students.
Indoor Gardens
We have a wide range of gardeners in our school. Some of the teachers are avid gardeners. Others proclaim they grow terrific piles of mud! Most of our students have had very little contact with plants and growing things, while other students really enjoy sitting in the garden for hours. Yet all of us seem to have one thing in common – we love having green plants brightening up our classrooms. So, with the help of a community volunteer, each classroom will build a seed starting area and have an indoor garden area to work with. Plants for these indoor gardens will be carefully selected to ensure their success. One windowless room will try a new container garden developed by NASA for use on the space shuttle missions. The science classroom will experiment with a special hydroponics growing area. Pizza gardens, herb gardens, windowsill salads – a wide variety of choices to fit each class's personality and interests!
Garden Design
With Kurt's help and guidance, one of our major projects this year is the redesign of the green space behind our main building. This common area is surrounded by a walking track and is bordered by a small basketball court on one side and a playground on the other. A large wooden gazebo sits in the center. Students will design and install the new landscaping and create a tranquil, relaxing area for our staff and visitors.
