The Compass School is a public charter school located in Kingston, RI. The school enrolls 145 students in grades K-8 from 10 towns in Washington County. The general themes of social responsibility and environmental sustainability provide an overall focus for the school.
Actual gardens and gardening provide for hands-on, real life learning that compliments our mission as well as our project based, constructivist teaching approach.
The school is located in a rural location and students make frequent use of the outdoor areas. A vegetable garden has been maintained at the Compass School for several years. Students from all grades have assisted in planting and maintaining the garden. Families have been involved in the summer with garden maintenance.
Our immediate goal for our current garden is having a school-wide plan for the entire garden area and organizing everyone's efforts. Organization will provide a timeline and responsibilities to ensure that the garden area is well planned, built, planted and
maintained.
The Compass School is planning to expand. Our long term goal is to design and view our entire outdoor campus as an educational landscape. Students will use the outdoor space as an integral, ongoing part of their total learning experience.
