Choosing a Leader

A good leader will make your garden education program better and more efficient. Look for these skills and characteristics in your leader:

  1. Personable, can work with a variety of people types and temperaments
  2. Passionate about their own involvement, but will not interfere with the group process
  3. Sets the tone and temperament for the group
  4. Doesn't do everything, but ensures that everything gets done when it must get done
  5. Good delegator, can handle chaos and knows how to take care of people
  6. Thinks two steps ahead of everyone else
  7. Serves as the voice & face of the organization – always available to speak and be seen in public, at events and when asked

Garden Team Tips

  • Consider picking a leader after your team has begun to work together regularly. Good leaders often emerge from the group and not before the group has established a working style for itself.

  • Consider having multiple leaders for different tasks or teams of people.
